Questions about autism assessment

Everything families and carers need to know about autism assessment, diagnosis, and support in the UK.

No. Neurohelp.ai is a pre-clinical assessment and support navigation tool. Our reports are not clinical diagnoses and cannot replace formal assessment by a qualified clinician (such as a Consultant Paediatrician, Psychiatrist, or Clinical Psychologist). Our reports are designed to support conversations with healthcare professionals and help you navigate available pathways.
For children under 18, request a referral from your GP to CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) or a community paediatrician. For adults, ask your GP for a referral to an adult autism diagnostic service. Waiting times can be 2–5 years on the NHS. Neurohelp.ai can generate a professional letter to support your GP referral request.
An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is a legal document for children and young people aged 0–25 with special educational needs in England. It sets out your child's needs and the support they should receive. You can request an EHC needs assessment from your local authority at any time — you do not need a diagnosis first. Schools and GPs can also request one on your behalf.
Early signs of autism in toddlers (18 months–3 years) include: limited eye contact, not pointing or waving, not responding to their name, delayed speech or loss of words they previously had, repetitive movements like hand-flapping or rocking, unusual sensory responses, and strong reactions to changes in routine. Our free assessment tool is calibrated to detect these early indicators.
Yes. There is no age limit for an autism diagnosis. Many people — particularly women and people of colour — receive their diagnosis in adulthood, sometimes in their 30s, 40s, or beyond. Adult autism assessment is available through the NHS (long waiting lists) or private providers (typically £800–£2,000). Neurohelp.ai offers a dedicated adult self-assessment pathway.
For children: Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Carer's Allowance for the parent/carer. For adults: Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), and Access to Work grants for workplace adjustments. Universal Credit may also be available. You do not always need a formal diagnosis to claim — the assessment is based on how your condition affects you day-to-day.
PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) is a profile on the autism spectrum characterised by an extreme need to avoid everyday demands and expectations. People with PDA use social strategies to resist demands, can appear more sociable than typical autistic presentations, and have high anxiety. PDA requires a different support approach from standard autism strategies. Our assessment tool includes PDA-specific indicators.
Autistic burnout is a state of intense physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion that occurs when autistic people have been masking (camouflaging their autism) for extended periods without adequate support or recovery time. Symptoms include loss of skills, extreme fatigue, withdrawal, and inability to function. It is increasingly recognised as a serious concern in the autistic community and requires significant recovery time and reduced demands.
